Texas Heart Institute

Student Scholar Intern (Co-Op)

​

Texas Heart Institute, located in the Houston, Texas Medical Center, is one of the first institutions to successfully surgically implant an artificial heart in the 1960s. 

​

Perform regulatory requirements that govern clinical/nonclinical research studies. Responsible for the operation and maintenance of Image Pro Analysis System, JEOL Low Vacuum Electron Microscope Scanning, general laboratory equipment (pH meter, electron balances, etc.), handling and analysis of tissue samplings, providing assistance in necropsy procedures, writing/reviewing standard operating procedures, assist in tissue/organ photography morphometric analysis, statistical analysis, and preparation of solutions. All pertaining to Good Laboratory Practice. 

​

This co-op/internship experience range from January 2022 ~ to August 2022. Offering exposure to medical research and facilitating consulting for FDA approval-pending medical devices in their primary clinical testing stages.

Mobilized research with using nanotechnology components and fabrication techniques to design a headset that will track and map brain patterns in patients diagnosed with ADHD. A unique opportunity and experience to collaborate with professors, graduate students, and fellow biomedical engineers to test, fabricate and design a medical device headset that would be utilized in diagnosing patients with ADHD

Specialized in creating accessible programs/scholarships for NSBE membership, corporate-jointed scholarships, and engineering workshops for regional conventions (covering 10-states). Managed team of advisors and regional board members to initiate NSBE’s first Engineering Innovation Challenge. I looked forward to having the unique opportunity to support the NSBE membership by offering accessible, engaging, and inspiring academic engineering programs. Such as scholarships, company-sponsored workshops, leadership presentations, planned research exhibitions, and several other activities that I will learn more about and contribute to.

Brain Works Website

Created a website using coding languages including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python, and Google AppEngine.  The website includes multiple features such as a login page, a mapped image, some cursor hover effects, a brain quiz, and a progress tracker. 

NASA Texas High School Aerospace (HAS)

A highly selective program for an onsite NASA internship (unpaid). Students applied to the program, and proceeded through an online instruction class that was comprised of four modules: "Discovering There", "Getting There", "Living There", and "Working There". In a collaborative effort, teams brainstormed, designed, and tested various ideas and theories that would be utilized on realistic Orin missions to Mars!

BUILD is a community service organization that fabricates and constructs medical clinics from shipping containers and supplies these to underdeveloped areas in need all over the world. Check out my video and what BUILD means to our members and volunteers in the recent BUILD 2021 gala video.

Region V Academic Excellence Website

While serving as the NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers) Region V Academic Excellence Chair, creating a website was a top priority in the position in order to organize and present an elaborate presentation of information in a coherent fashion.  This will be the first year of an active Academic Excellence website.  The purpose of the website is to present detailed information on scholarship opportunities, Region-wide programs (including Academic Tech Bowl, Technical Research Exhibition, Engineering Innovation Challenge, and the Region V POint System Catalog Competition), and other additional useful applications for members to understand and explore.
